Email messages are the fastest consumer of data in most instances. A Salesforce instance running standard Email-to-Case (or an equivalent Email Service) for 2-3 years can easily see email messages consuming 40, 50, or even 75% of the overall data storage footprint. For most standard data objects, Salesforce calculates data storage at a standard 2 KB per record. 500,000 Accounts records will consume a little under 1 GB of data storage.
